We start from the village and head straight out onto the tracks that run along the edge of the dunes, where the sand is firm enough to move quickly.
The route passes the nomad families who camp around the erg, the abandoned mine workings at Mifis and the flat stony hamada that stretches towards the Algerian border.
We stop at Khamlia, the village founded by descendants of sub-Saharan populations, where gnawa music is played live in the afternoons, and have tea before turning back.
Sandboarding can be added on the steeper faces if you want it. We are back in the village by late afternoon, or in time for sunset if you prefer.
